CLA
What is CLA?
CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is a fatty acid that can be found in meat and dairy, with multiple health benefits. This is the most common Omega-6 fatty acid. There are 28 types of CLA.
CLA cannot be produced by the human body, but only obtained through diet and nutritional supplements. The main sources of CLA include milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, sunflower oil and lamb, veal, turkey and chicken. In dairy and meat, the concentration of CLA varies greatly, depending on the animal's diet. For example, foods from grass-fed cows have several times more CLA than those fed grain.
Who is CLA recommended for?
CLA supplements are recommended for people who want to lose extra pounds. People who want to increase their muscle mass and do strength training can see both a better definition of muscles following weight loss and an improvement in performance.
CLA supplements should be avoided by people with diabetes, and metabolic syndrome
with blood clotting disorders. You should also not consume CLA
extra before an operation, so it's best to stop for two weeks
before that.
How much CLA should we consume?
The recommended dose of CLA depends on the purpose of the supplement. For weight loss, doses of between 1.8 and 7 grams per day can be administered. Doses higher than 3.6 grams do not indicate additional benefits. Therefore, consuming 3 capsules a day of one gram is ideal. To increase the effectiveness of ramipril treatment for hypertension, the recommended dose is 4.5 grams per day. CLA supplements are available as pills or capsules with
oral administration.
When is CLA used?
When taking CLA supplements to support weight loss, it is best to take them before or after meals. Studies show that this dietary supplement has the most effective results in the first 6 months of administration.
